Low Waste and Low Budget Part 1

Sustainability

I’ve been pondering over this post for a while now. As someone who cares about the planet I often feel like I am a bad low waster because I can’t always (or already) do all the things people talk about. Low waste and low budget sometimes seems unattainable. So I decided to do a series on how I try to overcome the obstacles of being low waste when you have a low income, and how to reconcile your feelings when it’s just not possible.

I am luckier than most, my income is variable but it does happen on occasion that I have a little additional income, and I usually use those times to buy any items to help with my journey to reduce my waste. For example, buying a stainless steel water bottle when the plastic water bottle that I’d had for years cracked, and needed to be replaced. Stainless steel is more hard-wearing, and should last longer than other materials I could have bought.

However, that is rare. Plus, there is only so much you need in your low waste kit. My basic, always in my bag items are; reusable water bottle, reusable coffee cup, cutlery, cloth napkin, and some little zippered pouches to hold food such as cookies, bread, sweets, etc. I will be doing a separate post just about these items so I’m not going to go into detail here.

The other topic I intend to include in this series is food shopping, this is the place I struggle most. So much of the food I buy (and have access to) comes in plastic, and the problem only seems to get worse if you have a very small budget. Some months my food budget can be as little as £30, when your budget is that small it can be difficult to make low waste choices, even when you want to.

I do what I can to be low waste, though, and I think that’s all any of us can do. I wanted this post to be a basic introduction, and I will be adding new posts each month. Feel free to comment with your low waste and low budget suggestions, or if there is something in particular you would like me to cover in this series.
